Reducing Histamine Reactions with the Eat Burn Sleep Lifestyle

What is Histamine?

Mast cells are critical players in the inflammatory response. Histamine is a compound found in nearly all tissues in the body, where it is stored in the granules of tissue mast cells. It is also found in blood cells and is called basophils.

Histamine promotes the rapid removal of toxic substances after injury or allergic reaction as part of your immune response.

It is an integral part of intestinal homeostasis, which triggers the release of stomach acid to ease digestion and is essential for the survival of gut bacteria. It also serves as a neurotransmitter, carrying chemical messages to your brain.

Our circadian rhythms, wound healing, blood pressure, contraction of smooth muscle cells, and regulation of cell proliferation are all affected by histamine.

Histamine is naturally produced alongside another enzyme called Diamine Oxidase (DAO) and occurs naturally in food too!

Diamine Oxidase (DAO) breaks down histamine from food intake, preventing it from being absorbed in the gut and entering the bloodstream. (This can trigger an immune response if it happens).

Histamine N-methyltransferase (HNMT) is an enzyme metabolizing histamine (to a lesser extent than DAO).

Histamine generally has a short life in the body, and most people can tolerate the amount found in foods. Still, some people lack the necessary enzyme, Diamine Oxidase, to process it due to many reasons, such as poor gut health, genetics, and medication. See the list below.

Histamine Intolerance

Histamine intolerance is a condition where the body cannot metabolize histamine, originating in the gut. Schnedi & Enko (2021).

Some factors can interfere with how DAO and HNMT work and how much of these enzymes reside in the gut.

Histamine intolerance is widespread alongside gastrointestinal issues, and patients with histamine intolerance frequently have DAO deficiency.

High amounts of histamine secreted by gut bacteria were linked to a pro-inflammatory response and signs of deteriorating health in studies on mice. This enhances the toxicity of intestinal histamine. Additionally, an excess of histamine could negatively affect the inflammatory state of the intestinal mucosa. Krell et al. (2021), Sudo et al. (2019)Ferstl et al. (2014).

If you are deficient in diamine oxidase (DAO), you may be unable to break down histamine. Low levels of DAO can cause histamine levels to rise, leading to histamine sensitivity, idiopathic mast cell activation syndrome (Giannetti et al. 2021), and chronic inflammation.

You can develop histamine intolerance when histamine levels get too low or high.

Symptoms of Histamine Intolerance:

Histamine intolerance is associated with common allergic responses and symptoms. While they may vary, common reactions include:

  • Headaches or migraines
  • Nasal congestion or sinus issues
  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Fatigue
  • Hives
  • Digestive issues – bloating, stomach pain, diarrhea
  • Pain around the chest and shoulders
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Dizziness

 

In more severe cases of histamine intolerance, the following may be experienced:

  • Abdominal cramping
  • Tissue swelling
  • High blood pressure
  • Irregular heart rate
  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty regulating body temperature
  • Dizziness

One Year Later – A Life-Changing Journey with EBS!

I have done a review previously when I started EBS, but I wanted to share another one a year later. I’ve followed Yalda for around a year and a half now. She was the one who inspired me to change my lifestyle and opened up my awareness of foods and the inflammation within the body.

What I’ve found with EBS is that we are not restricting—we are changing everything, right down to our gut bacteria and taste buds, by being more mindful in our daily choices.

I used to eat takeaway food every week, crave sugar after evening meals, and binge eat multiple days a week. It was a never-ending downward spiral. EBS has changed my thought process around food. I started following you on IG 2 years ago, and something about the way you formed the lifestyle and community really resonated with me.

I’m 77 and have 2 lovely daughters in their 50s and grandchildren in their 20s. I’ve been married for 56 years, and we are a close family. My lovely sister Ingrid is a member of EBS.

In my younger days, I suffered from continuing migraines, so I took painkillers all the time. Looking back now, with the experience and knowledge you gain as you get older, I realize I was really harming my gut. So, I’ve had problems for about 20 years. Gastritis was diagnosed after an endoscopy and scans, etc.

I have learned the only way to deal with it is through a good diet and lifestyle. So that’s where you got me! I do yoga classes too.

I really think this makes so much difference with a strong core and good posture, so that is why I absolutely love your information — but it’s so much more than that.

It’s your caring and kindness and the way you love your boys. It’s beautiful. You are an inspiration.

Hi Yalda, I’ve been following the green list 80-90% of the time, as my body struggles with digestion and assimilation of foods. I cut out sugars in September, and it helped a great deal (I have been gluten and milk intolerant since I was 6 years old).

What I find amazing and so inspiring is that everything you tell us resonates on all levels with my struggles and experience, and it gives me support to continue on this path. I felt really lonely and depressed before coming in touch with your platform. I no longer feel condemned to being in such a vulnerable state.

I knew I had made good choices earlier in the day and would make good choices the rest of the weekend, so I didn’t have any stress about a nice family dinner. I also naturally felt full sooner, so I didn’t feel like I overate.

With the 80/20 approach, I really don’t feel like I’m giving anything up! If I want something, I have it and enjoy it — but honestly, I find that I don’t really want it anymore.

All that to say — thank you for a truly sustainable lifestyle and for finally helping me to have a healthy relationship with food.

A Win for the Whole Family!

I have been following your Instagram for over three years, and this week I finally took the plunge and joined the platform.

Tonight, I rushed home from work, picked up the kids from after-school care and daycare, and shoved some store-bought fish fingers in the oven, thinking they’d be quick so I could get the kids fed and make the Thai fish cakes for myself.

I started my EBS journey in August 2021, shortly after being diagnosed with ME. I also suffer from endometriosis, migraines, and IBS.

I retired in late November after almost 40 years of management in the retail industry.

Life-Changing Reset!

Hey, queen! I just finished my 6-week reset and I cannot begin to tell you how this has changed my life. I struggle with hormone imbalance, joint issues, depression, migraines, and obesity.

A Miraculous Turn with Iron Deficiency!

The Anti-Inflammatory Lifestyle – A Game Changer!

The anti-inflammatory lifestyle is the best thing that could have ever been introduced to me and has helped me get back on my feet again health-wise.

I have a hiatus hernia, a gallbladder that needs removing as it’s full of stones, and gastrointestinal issues. My surgery has been delayed multiple times due to Covid, and now I’m dealing with weight issues. I love the NHS and respect it fully, but they didn’t take my conditions seriously and couldn’t diagnose me. I had spent a fortune to finally realize what my medical problems were.

I’m thankful that I can live again without pain, without burning my oesophagus, and vomiting after every meal due to acid reflux and the hiatus hernia. I’ve still not received surgery, but my conditions are a lot less.

I’m less puffy and bloated, and I can keep food down. Now, gradually, my weight is coming down as well.

So, I thank you for what you share with the public and for making life worth living again. Because I went to some very dark places before, and I’m happy now.

A Hopeful Start to Healing!

At the beginning of this horrible year, I discovered that I have mild PBC (Primary Biliary Cirrhosis) — a not-so-common autoimmune condition of the liver.

I tried different diets, and while my liver enzymes remained stable or slightly increased, I never felt truly satisfied.
