Managing IBS The Eat Burn Sleep Way

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal condition that affects an estimated 11% of the global population. It is considered a functional disorder, meaning it impacts how the gut works without showing visible signs of damage in medical tests. The condition is characterised by a range of symptoms, including abdominal cramping, bloating, constipation, chronic diarrhea, or alternating episodes of both. These symptoms often come and go, varying in severity and duration from person to person.

Although the exact cause of IBS remains unclear, several contributing factors have been identified. Gut dysbiosis, which refers to an imbalance in the gut microbiome, is frequently associated with IBS. This imbalance may reduce microbiome diversity and disrupt normal digestive function. Some studies also suggest a link between IBS and increased intestinal permeability, often referred to as “leaky gut.” This condition may allow unwanted substances to pass through the gut lining, potentially contributing to low-grade, chronic inflammation in the digestive tract.

The gut-brain axis, a communication network between the digestive system and the central nervous system, also appears to play a role in IBS. Stress and emotional well-being are closely connected to gut health, and many individuals with IBS report that symptoms may worsen during times of heightened stress. Interestingly, the gut is known to produce a significant portion of the body’s neurotransmitters, further highlighting the complex relationship between mental and digestive health.

Although IBS is not life-threatening, it can significantly affect quality of life due to its chronic and unpredictable nature.

Symptoms of IBS
  • Abdominal pain or cramping (often relieved by a bowel movement)
  • Bloating or a feeling of fullness
  • Constipation (infrequent, hard, or difficult-to-pass stools)
  • Chronic diarrhea (frequent, loose, or urgent stools)
  • Alternating constipation and diarrhea
  • Excess gas or flatulence
  • Mucus in the stool
  • Changes in bowel habits (e.g., urgency, incomplete evacuation)
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Disrupted sleep
  • Worsening of symptoms after eating
  • Relief of symptoms after a bowel movement

Not everyone experiences all symptoms, and they may come and go or vary in intensity.

Risk Factors
  • Family history of IBS or other gastrointestinal disorders
  • History of gastrointestinal infections (e.g. food poisoning or gastroenteritis)
  • Chronic stress or anxiety
  • Early life stress or trauma
  • Imbalanced gut microbiome (gut dysbiosis)

One Year Later – A Life-Changing Journey with EBS!

I have done a review previously when I started EBS, but I wanted to share another one a year later. I’ve followed Yalda for around a year and a half now. She was the one who inspired me to change my lifestyle and opened up my awareness of foods and the inflammation within the body.

From Diagnosis to Remission – How EBS Supported My Healing Journey!

I have followed Yalda and been a member of Eat Burn Sleep since 2019. I followed the Reset and the lifestyle on and off until December 2022, to manage IBS, when I sensed something was wrong with my body.

In January 2023, I decided to commit fully to the lifestyle again. Around that time, I found a lump in my right breast during a self-exam, which led to a triple negative breast cancer diagnosis later that month.

As soon as I found the lump, I not only restarted Week 1 of the lifestyle, but I also implemented all the cancer-support protocols available on the platform. I reached out to the team and began working with Yalda as my nutrition coach.

In parallel, I underwent an aggressive treatment plan with my oncology team: 16 chemotherapy sessions, surgery, immunotherapy, and radiation. Yalda and the EBS program were instrumental throughout.

Thanks to the lifestyle, chemotherapy—while never easy—was far more manageable. My gut and liver were in such a good place that my body could truly focus on healing. My lab work remained almost normal throughout, and my doctors were consistently surprised by how positive and well I felt, even after months of treatment. Yalda supported me at every step: encouraging positivity, meditation, movement when possible, clean anti-inflammatory eating, and visualizing remission daily. She even did extra research to support my case.

Today, I’m in remission. I’ve completed chemotherapy and surgery and am continuing with immunotherapy and radiation. Life-Changing Support and Hope for Rheumatoid Arthritis!

I attended the Ampersand Yalda did last week for stress, IBS, and arthritis and found it absolutely amazing. I burst into tears about halfway through as I agreed with everything you were saying.

A Life-Changing Journey With EBS!

I started my EBS journey in August 2021, shortly after being diagnosed with ME. I also suffer from endometriosis, migraines, and IBS.

At the time, I was at a real low point—chronically fatigued, in pain every day, and feeling completely stuck. I had been following Yalda on Instagram for a while and finally decided to give the platform a try.

I began with the Six-Week Reset and couldn’t believe the difference I felt in just a few weeks: no bloating, more energy, less brain fog, better mood, improved sleep and skin—I felt mentally stronger and more balanced.

Nine months later, my ME is totally under control, and my energy levels are back to what they were before my diagnosis.

The lifestyle is incredibly easy to follow, and the recipes are absolutely delicious. I also believe that the mental wellness component of the program is essential—it has helped me maintain a positive mindset and truly flourish again.

I have been following the Eat Burn Sleep lifestyle for around 5 weeks now after suffering from numerous annoying symptoms I put down to perimenopause (which, at 42, my doctor told me I’m too young to be going through).

Taking Control of My Health with Eat Burn Sleep!

I have Hashimoto’s, which was diagnosed after my second child. I felt exhausted from the moment I woke up to the moment I went to bed—no amount of sleep helped. I used to think that was parenthood! I saw a naturopath who helped a lot, and I stopped eating gluten and dairy, which helped for ages. Then I slipped back into bad habits after my third child, drinking coffee, eating sugary foods, and while I avoided dairy and gluten, I ate all the alternatives like pasta, dairy-free cheese, etc.

I have followed you for years, even tried some of your recipes, but I never joined the plan.

I started it 3 weeks ago, and I can honestly say I LOVE it. Hi Yalda, I am so grateful for all the work you’ve done on Eat Burn Sleep – you have no idea! About a year ago, I was diagnosed with chronic gastritis (inflammation in the stomach lining) and severe vitamin B12 deficiency because of that, in addition to high blood pressure. Not to mention having constant inflammation and pain in my knee and elbow that never went away, bloating, and always feeling tired.

I followed your Instagram for about 1-2 months before subscribing to the Eat Burn Sleep lifestyle and began slowly changing a few eating habits every day from what I saw and read there. Everything made so much sense, I love that it’s not a diet, and all the research you’ve done is amazing.

After about a month, as the pollen season started, I noticed that I didn’t have any pollen allergy symptoms anymore and could finally stop taking my antihistamines after 7 years of severe pollen allergy. This definitely made me subscribe to the Eat Burn Sleep lifestyle.

First impressions after just four days:

Control, Confidence, and Progress!
I went out for dinner with friends, and we ordered pizza and pasta. I had one small slice of pizza and just two tablespoons of the El Forno pasta. The best part? My body actually told me when I’d had enough—I knew how to portion my food, even on a cheat meal.

Normally, I would have devoured at least half a pizza and half the bowl of pasta without thinking twice. But this time, I felt comfortable, satisfied, and I didn’t bloat at all.

Finding Healing When I Felt Lost

IBS Expert Advice

Flaring up can be dealt with through this protocol that Yalda uses for herself, her friends, and people she coaches with similar conditions. A flare-up can be brought on by eating the wrong foods, being stressed, not sleeping enough, and sometimes by travel and a change of environment.

Nutrition

Food to avoid:

  • All the red-list foods
  • Too much fiber (spinach, kale, leaves, anything too green and too fibrous)
  • Raw foods (harder to break down)
  • Whole seeds and nuts
  • Coffee
  • Raw fruit
  • Sugar and anything that tastes too sweet
  • Cold foods and cold drinks
  • Green juices
  • Konjac noodles (once you are in remission, it is fine)
  • Cauliflower, Jerusalem artichokes

 

Foods to favor:

  • All forms of animal protein, cooked and unprocessed (the high amino-acid content helps rebuild the gut lining)
  • Slow-cooked foods (slow-cooking supports the spleen function in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which supports the digestive system)
  • Fish high in omega-3 fatty acids (wild salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring, anchovies)
  • Healthy oils (olive oil, avocado oil)
  • Healthy salts (all forms of salts but fine table salt)
  • Slow-cooked foods high in collagen: chicken soup, slow-cooked cuts such as oxtail, knuckle, or anything that look gelatinous (such cuts, while cheaper, are actually packed with collagen and mitochondria)
  • All the soups on the platform
  • Nut butter if you need extra energy
  • Eggs
  • Homemade mayonnaise
  • Olives
  • Stewed apples (up to one a day)
  • Beef or chicken bone broth (sip 3 cups a day, between meals or at the start of meals)
  • Vegetable broth
  • Fennel tea
  • Peppermint tea
  • 2 to 3 liters of water (either room temperature or warm), sipped throughout the day
  • Warm foods and drinks
  • Cook with warming spices such as turmeric, ginger, and saffron.
Supplements
  • Probiotic: VSL-3 has been shown to reduce flares for Ulcerative Colitis sufferers, as you can see in this 2014 meta-analysis
    • Mix the powder with water and have it on an empty stomach first thing after waking up and at least 30 minutes before breakfast.
  • Powdered psyllium husks: They have been shown to regulate the intestinal barrier and inflammation in normal and colitic mice in a study by the Cambridge university
    • Yalda has had wonderful results with numerous people and herself by supplementing with powdered psyllium husk fiber, as long as it is pure and not mixed with sweeteners or artificial flavoring.
    • Mix one teaspoon with water twice a day between meals, and drink immediately. Followed by a large glass of water.
    • Make sure to drink plenty of water and hydrate when taking psyllium husks.
  • Collagen Hydrolysate: Collagen hydrolysate is high in L-glutamine, an amino acid that helps to heal soft tissues. Ramadass et al. (2016) have demonstrated the healing effect on the mucosal lining of collagen for Ulcerative Colitis sufferers.
    • Choose fish collagen or pasture-fed beef collagen hydrolysate.
    • Mix one tablespoon per day in a cup of weak green tea, fennel tea, or peppermint tea.

Note that if you are dehydrated, collagen powder can make you constipated, so make sure to drink enough fluids. Avoid it if you suffer from acne, which can sometimes exacerbate sebum production. When it comes to supplements, opt for powder over capsules as they need breaking down, which can burden the gastrointestinal tract.

Constipation

If you suffer from constipation, the Eat Burn Sleep Lifestyle will help you have regular bowel movements in time as it improves your gut bacteria and restores balance in the digestive tract.

Constipation isn’t good for you and can lead to higher toxins in your system. When stools aren’t excreted normally, the toxins they contain can leak back from the bowels into the bloodstream. This gives extra work for the liver, which has to remove those toxins from your body. It is important to keep a healthy liver for hormonal balance, weight loss, healthy blood production, and many more functions. The liver is the organ that performs the most functions in the body, so it is essential to keep it healthy and avoid overloading it with toxins.

Nutrition

Increasing your fiber intake (from the green lists) can help you go to the bathroom regularly. Cooked vegetables are even better as they are easier to digest.

Lifestyle
  • Movement: Try and walk daily as it helps with gut motility and regular bowel movements. Follow the advice in the Walk section
  • Hydration: You’re much more likely to be constipated if you aren’t hydrated properly, so make sure to follow the hydration advice. This is particularly true if you take a collagen supplement, so drink enough water and spread it out during the day. This recent study (2021) looks at all the factors associated with constipation in adults.
Supplements
  • You can also have magnesium citrate powder in the evening, which helps loosen the bowels. Have a tablespoon in powder form mixed with warm water, and drink it before bed.
  • Another good tip is to mix 1 or 2 tablespoons of milled flax seeds with a bit of water in a glass before going to bed. Place it in the fridge and have the mixture first thing upon waking with a large glass of water. Drink more tea / herbal tea and wait 30 minutes before eating. Flaxseeds are high in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties. Use them milled so absorption of the fatty acids is optimal.
  • Using psyllium husks is a great tool to naturally increase bowel movements and improve your health. They have been linked to a healthier gut, healthier weight, lower cholesterol levels, and healthier blood sugar levels. The best way to have them is twice a day. Use powdered psyllium husks that do not have added sweeteners to them. They do not taste great, but there’s a way to do it, which makes it easier to have them. Mix one to two tablespoons with very little water and drink it quickly. Follow with two large glasses of water as they swell in the stomach and will not only not work but make you dehydrated if you do not drink enough water when taking them. I advise taking them in the morning, before breakfast or between meals, and in the evening, before dinner or right before bedtime. The added benefit is that they are a natural appetite regulator too! Again, hydration is extremely important, as increased fiber intake without adequate hydration can make you more constipated.

Only use one of the above tips to help relieve your constipation, but not all of them on the same day!

Chronic Diarrhea

If you suffer from chronic diarrhea that’s not been linked to a specific diagnosis, the best way to improve your symptoms is to follow the EBS lifestyle and improve your gut bacteria. The cause of chronic diarrhea in adults is often inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS), so follow the advice in the IBS section linked here.

Nutrition

Reduce your intake of raw vegetables and prefer cooked foods as they are easier to digest. You shouldn’t completely stop raw vegetables and can continue consuming low-sugar fruits, per the meal planner. However, salads and crudités can lead to bloating and diarrhea if your gut flora isn’t optimal. Wait to have regular bowel movements before increasing your intake of raw vegetables and salads.

Keep adequate hydration levels, following the hydration advice, as loose bowels can leave you dehydrated.

Notice what upsets your digestive system and try to remove those foods. If you run to the bathroom after eating certain foods, try and remove them until your digestive health is improved. You can reintroduce them slowly when you are better, as long as your body tolerates them.

Supplements advice

Collagen hydrolysate powder can really help to rebuild your gut lining and improve leaky gut syndrome, as well as reduce the occurrence of loose bowel movements. Mix a tablespoon twice daily with shakes, soups, or herbal teas. Make sure to keep good hydration levels when you take it, or it could make you constipated!
